Mechelle's First Month at The Key!
My first month working at The Key has been amazing. Aside from the obvious perks of our workspace including on tap kombucha, amazing views of the San Francisco Bay, and random board games at my disposal (my favorite being Connect Four), our company is pretty awesome as well.
Everyone has been very welcoming and open with sharing their expertise in the field. For me, public relations has been a career change. I originally have a background in the entertainment and retail industries. I’ve dabbled in public relations prior to working at The Key, but it’s never been my primary job. I’ve learned so much in my first 30 days. So far I’ve created media lists, written press releases, and developed pitches to send to reporters. I really like the research and strategic planning aspects of the job.
A Day In The Life
No two days look the same, but here’s a pretty consistent look at my day:
6:00 AM - Typically I wake up around 6am. If I have a pitch that needs to go out to reporters that day, I start sending that. It’s already 9am on the east coast so we try to get pitches out pretty early. If I don’t have a pitch to send out, I begin scouring the internet for anything that may be newsworthy for our clients and anything our team or our clients should be in-the-know-about.
7:00 AM - Get ready and commute to the office.
9:00 AM - Arrive at the office, possibly get me a glass of kombucha, and finish up morning alerts then send them out to the team.
10:00 AM - Depends on the day. On Tuesdays and Fridays I have client calls. On Wednesdays I have a one on one meeting with my colleague Martina to check in on projects. If I have neither of those, I’m likely working on a project from the day before or doing research (there’s A LOT of reading in PR).
12:00 PM - Lunch! My favorite part of the day because I’m a foodie. Sometimes there’s free food, but most of the time I bring my lunch or grab something from the many cafes around us.
12:30 PM - 5:00 PM - This really varies. A lot of the projects that we work on are pretty time consuming so there’s no lack of work to be done. I might be working on multiple media lists, writing a pitch, or preparing a press release.
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM - Commute home.
The Team: #GirlPower (But we welcome guys too)
My favorite part of my job is working with my team. We’re a melting pot of cultures, personalities, and professional backgrounds. Our team is made up of people who have experience in journalism, tech, dance, cosmetology, and music (that’s me!). I also think it’s pretty cool that we’re all women: #whoruntheworld. Every single one of us is hilarious in different ways and my days are filled with equal parts of work and laughter.
Why I Love The Key
What’s really unique about working with such a tight knit team at The Key is that personal and professional development are omnipresent. Helping us achieve our personal and professional goals is important to the founders of our company. I love that I’m not limited by my job title in terms of opportunity. If I want to work on a project, send a pitch, or sit in on a conference call I am able to. If I have questions, I’m always encouraged to ask them. If there is an event or conference that I want to attend, I can suggest it and The Key may sponsor me to go or send the whole team. I’ve attended a few events so far that have varied from networking happy hours to fundraising galas. At the latter, I was able to meet author, blogger, and influencer Luvvie Ajayi!
Reflecting on my first month, I have to say that this is really a dream job. The Key is a great place to work and grow professionally. Every team member exudes such a positive energy and is really passionate about what they do. I’m beyond happy to be a part of such an inspiring team!
